Cocaine smuggling: Interpol, Scotland Yard help sought to nab culprits

Detective Branch of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has taken decision to seek help from Interpol and Scotland Yard in nabbing Bakul Mia, a UK resident, and Raju, an Indian national, after being confirmed about their involvement in liquid cocaine haul.
The DB got some information about Bakul Mia and Raju from the previously arrested four persons, who were picked up on charge of their alleged link with the cocaine consignment seized at Chittagong Port on June 6.
Moreover, police was been working to collect detailed information about the overseas personalities, Kusum Dewan, Deputy Commissioner (DB) of CMP said on Saturday.
“We have got information about the involvement of the Bakul and Raju based on the confessional statement given by the earlier arrested persons in this connection,” the police official said.
‘We will seek assistance from Interpol and Scotland Yard to arrest the foreign nationals,’ he said.
At least 10 detective men have been tasked with interrogating them about the seizure of liquid cocaine blended in edible oil at Chittagong Port, the police official said.
Meanwhile, CMP Detective Branch on Friday formed a 10-member probe body to investigate the cocaine consignment led by Deputy Commissioner
 Kusum Dewan following an instruction given by CMP Commissioner M Abdul Jalil Mandal.
The other members of the committee are Additional Deputy Commissioner SM Tanvir Arafat, three Assistant Commissioners M Qamruzzman, Foyjul Islam and Jahangir Alam, Kotwali Zone Assistant Police Commissioner M Moinuddin, Port Thana OC AKM Mahiuddin Selim, Akber Shah Thana OC Sadip Kumar Das and city detective police inspectors Abdur Rouf and Zahedul Islam.
City police additional commissioner (crime and operation) Debdas Bhattyachariya had a meeting with committee members on Saturday morning.
The four arrested men are Garments Exporter Mandol Group Commercial Executive Atiqur Rahman, Officer of a developer company Mostafa Kamal and Cosco Bangladesh Shipping Lines Limited Manager (corporate, sales and marketing) AK Azad and Khan Jahan Ali Limited Officer Golam Mostafa Sohel.
Earlier on June 6, customs intelligence officials seized a consignment of sunflower oil on suspicion.
Later on June 27, customs department said that they had found the presence of cocaine in the oil after chemical test in laboratory.
Bangladesh faces a narcotics threat from neighbouring Myanmar, from where heroin and methamphethamines are smuggled, sources said.
