The 14th International Short and Independent Film Festival-Dhaka will be begun on December 3, featuring over 500 films from around the world. This is the highest number of films featured in a single edition in the history of the biennial event, representing the highest number of participating countries, said the organisers at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity on November 9. Among others, the conference was attended by festival committee chairman Nasiruddin Yousuff, Bangladesh Short Film Forum chairman Jakir Hossain Raju, and filmmaker Jahidur Rahman Anjan.
These were selected after a record submission of 2567 films from around the world. Many of them are well-known and screened previously at festivals like Cannes, Busan, Berlin, Locarno, TIFF and others. Under seven sections including four competitive ones: International Competition (fiction), International Competition (documentary), NETPAC Jury Award, and Tareq Shahriar Best Independent Short. The non-competitive sections are Cinema of The World, Independent Film, and Retrospective.
Eminent Chinese filmmaker-professor Dr Xie Fei will deliver the Alamgir Kabir Memorial Lecture, while local filmmaker-teacher Dr Zakir Hossain Raju will present the keynote paper at the seminar.
The master classes will be conducted by Venezuelan director Atahualpa Lichy and Indonesian director Garin Nugroho.
