Sylhet Bureau :
According to party insiders, the dispute has deepened between Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury MP, AL Organising Secretary Adv Misbah Uddin Siraj, UK AL leader Hahibur Rahman Habib and Chairman of Dakshin Surma Upazila Parishad Mohammed Abu Jahid over the nomination of candidates for the polls in Sylhet-3 constituency.
An internal feud between four heavyweight Awami League leaders in Sylhet-3 (Dakshin Surma-Fenchugonj-Balagonj) could spread to all levels of the party in the district ahead of the parliamentary election.
Local sources said there are two groups at the grassroots level and the conflict between them may have a big impact on the party in the election, which is slated for December.
One is aiming to enjoy benefits by grabbing positions instead of working for the wellbeing of the party; while another is following the spirit of the party founder, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. ‘ Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury did not help the party activists who were the victims of BNP-Jammat men,’ Dakshin Surma upazila AL secretary Haji Roes Ali said. ‘He is not actually a man of Awami League. There are many allegations against him. He is a beneficiary from the party but did not work for it at all.
‘On the other-hand, Hahibur Rahman Habib is a man of clean image and he is committed to make success the vision of the party founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. We want him as a party candidate, Habib had made a great contribution to the ruling party. ‘ he said.
Advocate Lutfur Rahman, president of Sylhet district AL, said the party leaders and activists should ‘work unitedly’.
He also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will select the candidate who will get the nomination.
The four candidates are passing busy days in the area seeking votes among the people through regular gatherings and door-to-door canvassing.
