BSS, Dhaka :
As temperatures have fallen on an average two degrees Celsius during past 24 hours, the country is witnessing chilly weather and this weather condition is likely to continue during next few days, a meteorologist told BSS.
“Intensity of cold in Dhaka has sharply risen as temperature has decreased nearly five degrees Celsius,” he said adding, mercury is likely to rise again after two or three days.
Mild cold wave is sweeping over some parts of the country dropping mercury between two or more degrees Celsius and mild cold wave is likely to spread through its other regions, the meteorologist forecasted.
Moderate to thick fog may occur at places over the river basins and light to moderate fog may occur elsewhere over the country during mid night till morning, according to a weather bulletin issued here yesterday.
Mild cold wave is sweeping over the regions of Mymensingh, Tangail, Rajshahi, Pabna, Noagaon, Dinajpur and Chuadanga and it may spread, it added.
Night temperature may fall by 1-2 degrees Celsius over southern part and it may remain nearly unchanged elsewhere over the country and day temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.
Yesterday’s highest temperature 30.2 degrees Celsius was recorded at Khepupara and the lowest 8.4 degrees at Dinajpur. The country witnessed chilly weather after mid-December as the first spell
of cold wave swept during the period, Abdur Rahman, a meteorologist, said, “Second spell of cold wave is now sweeping over the country.”
Yesterday’s minimum temperature was recorded 17.5 degrees Celsius in Dhaka, 18 degrees in Chittagong, 10.6 degrees in Rajshahi, 11 degrees in Rangpur, 16.6 degrees in Khulna, 17.8 degrees in Barisal and 153 degrees in Sylhet.
Minimum temperature 12.5 degrees Celsius was recorded yesterday in Dhaka, 17.5 degrees in Chittagong, 13 degrees in Sylhet, 10 degrees in Rajshahi, 11.5 degrees in Rangpur, 12.6 degrees in Khulna and 12.8 degrees in Barisal. “Winter set late in the country this season and the country witnessed normal cold … This is a normal trend of weather,” Md Sadiqul Alam, a meteorologist of BMD, told the news agency.
In the past few days, intensity of cold was largely normal due to relatively weak ridge of sub-continental high, he said adding, “We are feeling normal intensity of cold because of low appearance of fog and sunny weather this winter season.
“Normally winter starts setting in at the beginning of December … but in recent years we observed delay in its arrival. It is not clear whether it has any link with the climate change,” a weather expert added.
According to climatologists, shrinking of winter period and prolonging of summer and rainy seasons are linked with climate change. As Bangladesh is already facing adverse impact of global warming, it is witnessing abnormal behavior of weather during the current decade, they added.
Setting of delayed cold might have link with climate change, they observed.
