Intellectual Property Rights can play vital role to ensure food safety, so we must aware about `IPR’ on global perspective .
Realizing our potential to produce enough food for the country’s expanding population will remain a major challenge in the future and intellectual property (IP) rights will play a key role in that sector.
Participants and speakers made this comment on a workshop styled as ` Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for Food Safety’ at DC Conference Room at Barishal on Monday noon.
The workshop was organised by Ministry of Industries with assistance of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Deputy Commissioner SM Ajiar Rahman inaugurated the workshop and industrialist, lawyer, officials and journalists participated in the workshop.
Mir Khairul Hasan, deputy secretary of Ministry of Industries presented key note paper in the workshop.
In 2033 all quota and protection of Bangladesh would be ended and then every industrial products needed IP protection. Without IP safe guard, no product could enter global market, so we should start necessary preparing to use IP rules, in the key note stated.
Pure and safe food production not only needed for human being. It is a precondition for sustainable development. Bangladesh on the way to being a Developing Country from Least Development Country. So without implementing Intellectual Property( IP) laws within schedule time, our products may loose entrance in global markets.
The revenue potential of intellectual property (IP) rights is also key driver of innovation.
In the sphere of agriculture, patent law, plant variety protection rights (breeder’s rights) and rights over genetic resources are particularly relevant, the participants opined.
The definition of Food security is “the state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.”
The extension of IPR to the agriculture sector is due to a global drive towards sustainable agriculture and striving for the most efficient, profitable and manageable agricultural industry.
There are many links between IPRs and food security. In general, IPRs such as patents or plant breeders’ rights seek to give incentives, mainly to private sector actors, to develop seeds that either produce higher yields or have specific characteristics which will improve food security and agro-biodiversity management.
So awareness among the food producers should be increased.We demand all authority for managing food safety with IPR under an umbrella, speakers advised.
