BSS, Dhaka :
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon on Friday said the people of the hill regions would have to be integrated with the mainstreams of politics, economy and culture by establishing friendly relationship with them.
He was speaking as chief guest at a seminar at CIDRAP auditorium in the city marking International Mountain Day 2015.
The Ministry for Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs organized the seminar on ‘Promoting Mountain Products for Better Livelihood’ with the ministry’s secretary Nabo Bikram Tripua in the chair.
State Minister for CHT Affairs Bir Bahadur Usoi Shing and Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on CHT Affairs Ministry RAM Obaidul Moktadir Chowdhury addressed the seminar as special guests.
Rashed Khan Menon said any ethnic problem should be resolved politically, not though military or any other means.
From this realization, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had signed the CHT peace treaty, he said, adding that despite the government’s sincerity, the people are not getting full benefit of the agreement as some issues, including land disputes, were not resolved.
Stressing the need for resolving land disputes, the minister said lasting peace is not possible in hill areas without it.
He suggested orientation of the goods produced by the hill people for their economic development and poverty eradication.
Earlier, the minister inaugurated a three-day mountain fair at Parbatya Chattagram Complex at Baily Road in the city.
Speaking on the occasion, he said the government has taken initiatives to spread the culture of the hill regions.
More steps would be taken in the next tourism year to make people aware of the art, culture and biodiversity of those regions, he added.
Bir Bahadur Usoi Shing said the peace is prevailing in the hills because of the signing of CHT peace treaty at the initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The mountain fair will end on December 13. A total of 46 stalls have been installed in the fair to display and sell goods produced by the hill people.
Artistes of hill areas will present cultural functions at the fair in the evening every day.
