Speakers at a seminar Thursday underscored the need for an integrated role of non government organizations (NGOs) in achieving the targets of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“Different NGGs work in single sector or multiple sectors . . . but every NGO should make voluntary declaration fixing their targets in line with the SDGs,” Chief Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Affairs in the PMO Abul Kalam Azad told the function at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre here.
NGO Affairs Bureau of (Prime Minister’s Office) PMO and Citizen’s Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh organized the function on “Non Government Development Organizations’ Role in Implementing SGDs in Bangladesh”.
Member of General Economics Division (GED) under Planning Commission Dr Shamsul Alam, Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation Chairman Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad and Citizen’s Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh convener Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya addressed the function, among others.
Abul Kalam Azad urged the NGOs to publish their work plans and voluntary declaration about their areas of activities within certain timeframe on the website.
“If every NGO publish its voluntary declaration containing work plans and achievements within certain time, we can get a consolidated form of their role,” he observed.
The chief coordinator of SDGs said they want to consolidate the integrated participation of NGOs with the government from the next year to multiply the speed of development.
He urged secretaries of the concerned ministries to receive the opinions of NGOs before formulating or reviewing any targets to implement SDGs as the government always cannot reach general people like the NGOs.
In his speech, Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad underscored the need for an enhanced role of private development organization in association with the government in achieving sustainable development.
“None can alone implement sustainable development goals. . . participation of all is a must,” he said adding that it is possible to achieve the major goals and targets of SDGs by 2030 through concerted efforts of all stakeholders including the NGOs.
