With a view to eradicate poverty and human development, Zakat should be distributed under institutional management. Zakat should not be distributed as relief in traditional form.
‘The impact of institutionally paid Zakat, rather than individually paid, is reflected in the total development of the society’, said by the speakers in the seminars organized in the last day of the fair. Zakat ensures social safety-net and reduces the gap between the rich and the poor, the speakers added.
The fair was jointly organized by Center for Zakat Management, Exim Bank, Islamic Relief UK and Muslim Aid Bangladesh. Justice Muhammad Abdur Rouf was the chief guest in the seminar titled ‘Institutional Approach of Zakat Management for Poverty Alleviation’ arranged in the last day of the fair. Dr. Mohammad Ayub Miah, CEO of CZM, Obaidur Rahman, Shabel Firuz, Country Director of Islamic Relief and Country Director of Muslim Aid participated in the discussion, which was presided over by Niaz Rahim, Chairman, Centre for Zakat Management.
A ‘Zakat Fair Declaration’ was announced by the organizers pledging to give Zakat an institutionalized shape and use as an effective tool for social welfare.
Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman, Former Adviser to Caretaker Government and Chairman, PPRC was present as Chief Guest in the morning session titled ‘Zakat for Sustainable Livelihood’. The discussion session was presided over by Former Secretary Dr. M. Mahbubur Rahman while Dr. Monowar Hossain, Professor Abu Ahmed and Professor Dr. Hosne-Ara Begum participated in the discussion.
AHM Mustafa Kamal, FCA, MP, Minister for Planning inaugurated the Zakat Fair on Friday morning. He urged the wealthy Muslims of the country to come forward with their Zakat and Awqaf fund for poverty alleviation. Zakat could be effectively used for complimentary support to Government’s on-going programs of eradication for poverty alleviation, he added.
At the inaugural day the Minister awarded scholarship to Zakat deserving 141 students of various public universities of Dhaka. He also distributed 10 laptops to medical students amongst them.
The opening program was presided over by Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) M Nooruddin Khan, Former Minister and President of IHMSWA, Salahuddin Kasem Khan, Managing Director of A K Khan & Co., Mr. Niaz Rahim, Chairman, Centre for Zakat Management, Mohammad Sabur Khan, Chairman, Daffodil International University, Shoaib Chowdhury, Vice-President, DCCI, AKM Nurul Fazal Bulbul, Secretary General, Exim Bank Foundation, Dr. Mohammad Ayub Miah, CEO, Centre for Zakat Management and Dr. Manzur-e-Elahi.
The two-day long Zakat Fair with the slogan ‘Making a difference with Zakat’ was crowded with thousands of people. Participants from all sectors attended the four seminars and visited the stalls in the fair. The fair was held at National Shooting Federation Complex, Gulshan-1, Dhaka.
