A female inmate of a non-governmental correction centre has died as she fell off the multi-storey centre building while trying to flee in the city’s Mirpur area.
The deceased was identified as Sumi Akhter, 18, an inmate of the centre run by Association for Correction and Social Rehabilitation (ACSR) at 2/B Darus Salam Road under Mirpur police station.
Contacted, ACSR Executive Officer Md Nasim said Tejgaon thana police handed Sumi over to the centre in 2012 where she was being provided with necessary trainings for her rehabilitation.
On Wednesday, Sumi along with two other inmates was trying to flee from the correctional centre climbing down from the rooftop of the five-storey building with their scarves.
However, Sumi fell onto the ground at about 7pm as her scarf tore off, Nasim said. She was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries at about 2am on Thursday.
