IN Narayanganj factory a teen-age boy died on Sunday after some workers pumped air into his body through rectum using the nozzle of a compressor at first causing him to become seriously sick. Media report said 10-year-old Sagar Barman was overpowered by some other workers and played the cruel game as he fought back to save him in vain. The father of the boy, who also works in the factory found his son critically ill lying beside a compressor inside the factory. He rushed him to nearby hospital where doctors forwarded the boy to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The autopsy report confirmed that he was killed by pumping air into his stomach through rectum. It appears beast like treatment to a minor boy to end it into a tragedy to his death. We know that it is not the first such inhuman cruelty but the list is only getting longer as trial of such criminals and their punishment are not highlighted in the media and such other social media. We believe such criminals must be tried in Speedy Trial Court in shortest possible time. In August last year, 13-year-old Rakib was killed in a similar way in a garage in Khulna. The garage owner was angry with him and pumped air from a compressor into his body through the rectum. The boy became seriously sick and later died.
It is heartening that a Khulna Court ended hearing of the case in 11 working days and handed down death penalty to two persons for killing the boy. But since such judgment is not catching public eyes and enough awareness is missing about it, unruly elements remained unaware of the punishment and committing the same crime. Torturing teen-age boys and girls sees no end. It is unfortunate that the father of the ill-fated boy would work in the same factory and has to see that barbarity meted out to his minor boy. It shows how this society is breaking apart and its moral values are disappearing fast. It is time more criminals are growing from ordinary people and committing dreaded crimes without fear of public reaction and punishment by court. Most criminals believe that they can escape and that such things are fun before they commit the crime.
In our view lawlessness is running high everywhere when presence of police is not seriously taken into account. But every crime can’t be manageable crime like the one in hand and we believe that the perpetrators would be quickly handed over to the court and be given the capital punishment for the crime that no one should commit again.
