Bangladesh’s Consumer Price Index (CPI), the main indicator of inflation, hit 10-year low in May mainly due to drop in prices of goods and services.
“The CPI eased further to 5.45 percentage point in May, the lowest rate in the last 10 years,” said Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal. The Minister came up with the information while releasing the monthly CPI index at a ‘Meet the Press’ programme held at the NEC conference room in the city on Monday. The CPI in April was 5.61, 5.65 in March and 5.62 in February.
Quoting the latest data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), Mustafa Kamal said, the point-to-point food inflation also declined to 3.81 percentage points in May from 3.84 in April.
“The non-food inflation rate also declined slightly to 7.92 per cent in May from 8.34 in April”, he added.
The Planning Minister said the inflation rate slightly decreased from the falling food and commodity prices in the global market.
The CPI inflation is likely to stay below the target of 6.2 per cent which was set for the outgoing fiscal year.
