The rate of general inflation continued to maintain a falling trend as the point-to-point inflation stood at 5.40 percent in July, the first month of the fiscal year 2016-17, down by 0.13 percentage points from 5.53 percent of June of FY16.
“The overall point-to-point inflation came down in July though the food inflation slightly jumped because of Eid-ul-Fitr,” planning minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters during a press briefing here on Tuesday.
Presenting data of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the minister said food inflation jumped slightly to 4.35 in July from 4.23 percent in June. But the non-food inflation came down to 6.98 percent in July from 7.50 percent of June, he added.
Kamal said the government is procuring food-grains at higher rate to ensure fair price for growers. It is also a reason for increasing the food inflation, he added.
In the rural areas, overall point-to-point inflation came down to 4.54 percent in July from 4.63 percent in June while the urban inflation rate dropped to 7 percent from 7.23 percent.
The rate of wage also increased to 6.13 percent in July from 6.10 percent in June.
