Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu on Saturday said the Industrial Policy 2016 has been formulated in a comprehensive manner as there have been consultations with stakeholders.
Addressing a seminar, he, however, said still there is a scope to bring some changes in the policy, if required.
Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) organised the seminar, titled ‘Industrial Policy 2016: Opportunities of industrialization and investment in Bangladesh’, at the DCCI auditorium with its acting President Humayun Rashid in the chair.
Amu said agriculture and agro-based industries are getting the highest priority in the industrial policy.
He said Bangladeshi medicines are being exported to 123 countries but 75 percent of its raw materials are imported. “We’re trying to lessen the import dependency.”The Industries Minister said the government is planning to establish 100 economic zones in the country within 15 years, and called upon businesspeople to invest in economic and sector-specific specialised economic zones to get uninterrupted power and gas supply.
He also said BICIC will get 30 percent land of new economic zones to allocate among SMEs for their development. By the end of this year, he said, 60 tanneries will be relocated to Savar Tannery Park.
Humayun Rashid said the Industrial Policy 2016 aims to contribute 35 percent to the national economy from the industrial sector.
