Business Report :
Price indices at country’s twin bourses -Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) -witnessed loss for two consecutive sessions on Wednesday, the third trading day of the week.
At the premier bourse, out of 320 issues traded, 156 ended lower, with large-cap shares lagging most.
The broader index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) ended only 1.09 points lower at 4852.08 when the blue-chip DS30 and the Shariah DSES were marginally down at 1847.97 and 1180.89 respectively.
The daily trade value and volume, however, increased as investors were repositioning ahead of the economic update for the first quarter (Q1) of the current 2015-16 financial year.
A total of 13.68 crore shares worth Taka 495.34 crore changed the hands on the day against Tuesday’s 10.81 crore shares for Taka 438.88 crore.
The volume and value were 13.90 per cent and 26.51 per cent up respectively over the previous session.
Financial stocks were in active buying at the middle of the session that supported the market for a while before large scale selling of heavyweight stocks at corrective prices started eroding the early vibe.
There was positive news on the market, but investors were eying the Q1 economic update, market analysts said, noting that the recent regulatory decision allowing local and foreign fund managers to form alternative investments would help drive market up.
Against the backdrop, the gaining major sectors were bank, NBFI, mutual fund and food and allied while the most lagging sectors were fuel and power, pharmaceuticals, textile and telecom.
At DSE, the top five gaining securities were GSP Finance, LR Global MF1, Peninsula, BD Finance and Prime Insurance when the most five lagging issues included BSCCL, DBH, EBLNBRMF, Jute Spinning and Zahin Textile.
GP was the market leader followed by Saif Power, Squire Pharmaceuticals, Islami Bank and FAR Chemicals. Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also closed flat on Wednesday, with its major CSCX index closing 11.21 points down at 9035.12.
Out of the traded 248 issues, 87 ended higher and 127 lower when 99.63 lakh shares worth Taka 33.31 crore changed hands.
