Legendary popular Indian singer-composer Bappi Lahiri breathed his last on Tuesday nightat the CritiCare Hospital in Juhu, Bombay. He was 69.
Born in West Bengal to a musical family, the larger-than-life Lahiri was renowned for his trademark gold chain and sunglasses and was credited with popularising disco music in India.
Lahiri, who recovered from Covid in April last year, was in the hospital for the past month.
His funky, foot-stomping music had Indians fall in love with disco and had an entire country dancing to his tunes.
Politicians, cricketers and Bollywood stars have mourned his death, with many remembering their favourite songs.

 deep shock and sorrow at the death of eminent music composer and Indian singer Bappi Lahiri.
In a condolence message, the president termed the death of this eminent music personality as an irreparable loss to the music arena of the subcontinent.
The head of the state prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi said he was saddened by Lahiri’s death.
“His demise leaves a big void in the world of Indian music,” Mr Modi tweeted. “Bappi Da will be remembered for his versatile singing and lively nature.”
“Lahiri had been admitted to the hospital for a month and was discharged on Monday. But his health deteriorated on Tuesday and his family called for a doctor to visit their home. He was brought to the hospital. He had multiple health issues. He died due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) shortly before midnight,” Dr Deepak Namjoshi, director of the hospital, told PTI.
An official statement was released by the late composer’s family announced that his funeral will take place on Thursday.
 The statement read, “It’s a deeply sad moment for us. The cremation will take on the arrival of Bappa (his son) from Los Angeles tomorrow mid morning. We are seeking love and blessings for his soul. We will keep you updated. The statement was signed by his wife ChitraniLahiri, Gobind Bansal, children BappaLahiri and Rema Lahiri.
Composer Bappi Lahiri, known for his synthesized disco beats, died in a hospital in Mumbai Tuesday night at the age of 69.
He had been in hospital for a month being treated for multiple health issues and died of sleep apnea, reports news agency PTI. Bappi Da, as he was known fondly, will be cremated tomorrow after the arrival of son Bappa from USA.

Tributes from Bollywood to Bappi Lahiri flooded in this morning. Akshay Kumar tweeted: “Today we lost another gem from the music industry. Bappi Da, your voice was the reason for millions to dance, including me. Thank you for all the happiness you brought through your music. My heartfelt condolences to the family. Om Shanti.”
