Indian media have described the verdict on Bangladesh-India maritime delimitation as a victory for Bangladesh.
India’s popular English daily The Hindu headlined ‘Bangladesh wins maritime dispute with India’ while Kolkata-based daily – The Telegraph – carried a story headlined ‘Gone: sea larger than Bengal, UN tribunal awards Dhaka marine chunk.
Besides, The Economic Times ran a story headlined ‘UN panel rules for Dhaka in Bay of Bengal dispute.’
The much-awaited verdict on the dispute over the delimitation of the maritime boundary between India and Bangladesh was made public on Tuesday, with a United Nations tribunal awarding Bangladesh 19,467 sq. km of the 25,602 sq. km sea area of the Bay of Bengal, The Hindu writes.
The Economic Times in its reports says India has welcomed a UN tribunal’s judgment on a maritime boundary dispute with Bangladesh, awarding the neighbouring nation (nearly) nearly four-fifths of an area sprawling over 25,000 sq km in the Bay of Bengal.
The verdict denies Indian fishermen access to the part of the sea lost to Bangladesh. It also means India cannot tap natural gas and oil reserves predicted in that region by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, says The Telegraph in its report.
On the other hand, International Business Times says putting to rest the decades-old issue between India and Bangladesh over a disputed area in the Bay of Bengal, a United Nations Tribunal awarded nearly four-fifth of the maritime territory to Bangladesh in a verdict which was made public on Tuesday.
