External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka on Monday night on a three-day visit to Bangladesh aiming to strengthen the relations between Bangladesh and In dia further.
He will be holding meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart Dr A K Abdul Momen today. He is also scheduled to call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the same day.
India and Bangladesh enjoy excellent bilateral relations with a number of important projects in the field of railways,
power and in frastructure sector being run in Bangladesh with Indian assistance and co-operation. However, issues like river water sharing remain to be finalised. Both the leaders are expected to discuss issues of mutual importance during the visit of the External Affairs Minister to Bangladesh. It will be the first Bangladesh visit of External Affairs Minister after the new government took oath in India in May.
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen received his Indian counterpart at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport upon his arrival at 9:20 pm, said an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Though Dr Momen described Jaishankar’s maiden visit (as minister) to Bangladesh as a “courtesy trip,” the two sides are likely to touch upon the matters relating to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s forthcoming visit to India, connectivity, water issues and Rohingya crisis during the visit. Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Riva Ganguly Das will host private dinner for the visiting Indian External Affairs Minister this evening.
Jaishankar will leave Dhaka on Wednesday morning.
