New Zealand’s nervous three-wicket win over Bangladesh on Friday more or less confirmed that India will play Bangladesh in the ICC World Cup 2015 quarter-finals on March 19 in Melbourne.
Bangladesh almost broke the unbeaten run of the co-hosts in their final Pool A match after they scored 288 runs, thanks to Mahmudullah’s second consecutive ton, and then through Shakib’s four wickets came close to beating the Kiwis on their home soil.
The win has 99 percent sealed Bangladesh’s fourth spot in the pool unless Scotland do the unthinkable and hammer Australia so badly that the Aussie net run rate (NRR) of +1.597 falls below Bangladesh’s (+0.136).
Incidentally it was the first time in eight matches since 2010 that New Zealand beat Bangladesh in an ODI. The seven matches Kiwis lost before today were all played in Bangladesh.
The Kiwis owe their jinx-breaking victory to Martin Guptill, who scored 105, with other contributions coming from Ross Tyalor (56), Corey Anderson (39) and Grant Elliott (39).
They will face the team finishing fourth in Pool B, where India will finish first and South Africa has also qualified for the last-eight stage.
The last two place in Pool B will be decided between Pakistan, Ireland and West Indies, when all those three teams play their final pool games on March 15. While the Windies take on UAE, Ireland will be up against Pakistan.
