India to award scholarships to 1364 B’deshi students this yr

The Indian government has a plan to award scholarships to 1364 Bangladeshi students this year, said a press release of the Indian high commission here on Saturday. The government of India is awarding scholarships to direct descendants of freedom fighters (Muktijoddhas) of Bangladesh for undergraduate and higher secondary studies every year.
Applications from direct descendents of the Muktijoddhas would be invited each year for the scholarships in the months of September and October, it said.
The Indian government started the scholarships scheme in 2006-07 under which 4462 students at the higher secondary level and 2080 at undergraduate level have so far been awarded the scholarships, the press release added. Meanwhile, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozzammel Huq handed over cheques for the scholarships to 30 children of Dhaka region as a symbolic start of cheque distribution ceremonies for the year 2014. Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pankaj Saran was present on the occasion.
