India is likely to lift ban on onion export to Bangladesh from next month.
The neighbouring country imposed the ban five months back due to skyrocketing prices of the key cooking ingredient there amid supply crunch.
“Indian onion would come finally. India will lift the ban of onion export to Bangladesh on March 2,” businessmen in Hili land
port told media quoting Indian businessmen.
They said new onions are available in India now. Initially the price will be fixed Tk 30-35 per kg.
“A meeting over onion export will be held in New Delhi on March 2. In this meeting the decision will be taken to lifting the ban. The onion export by India may be started from March 3,” said a trader.
India onion exporter Sanjoy Kumar said that Indian government had ban export of onion due to poor supply and price hike in local market. Recently, farmers have been harvesting new onion in various provinces. As a result, adequate supply brings down the onion prices in local market.
