A century from Lokesh Rahul helped India reach 358-5 and a commanding lead of 160 runs at stumps on the second day of the second test against the West Indies on Sunday.
Rahul compiled a patient and well worked 158 from 303 deliveries before he was eventually dismissed by fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, edging down leg-side to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich.
The 24-year-old Rahul stroked 15 boundaries and three sixes in his third test hundred.
Cheteshwar Pujara (46) and Captain Virat Kohli (44) also made valuable contributions but were unable to capitalize on promising starts. Ravi Ashwin (3) was trapped lbw by Devendra Bishoo midway through the evening session.
Despite struggling to take wickets, the West Indies’ attack was able to limit India’s scoring with consistently tight bowling, restricting the run-rate to less than three per over.
The not out batsmen, Ajinkya Rahane (42) and Wriddhiman Saha (17) dug in during the last session, playing solidly in defense as they patiently added to the total.
Offspinner Roston Chase dismissed Shikhar Dhawan (27), caught at short cover, and Kohli to return 2-91 and threw down the stumps with a direct hit at the non-striker’s end to run out Pujara.
Paceman Miguel Cummins was briefly replaced by a substitute fielder with what appeared to be a hamstring straing, but returned later after treatment for cramps.
India leads the four-match series 1-0.
