The 48th Independence and National Day was celebrated yesterday in the port city as elsewhere in the district with renewed pledges to move the country forward side by side upholding the spirit of the liberation war.
Local administration, different political parties and its associated bodies, educational institutions, professional and trade bodies and socio-cultural organizations observed the day through daylong programs.
The District Administration chalked out elaborate programs to observe the day amidst much enthusiasm and festivity in the district. Chattogram district administration accorded reception to the freedom fighters at local circuit house today. The day’s programs began through heralding 31-gun salutes on the premises of the court building at 12.01 am followed by playing of whistles simultaneously from rails, steamers and vessels of the port.
The programs included placing of wreaths at Shaheed Minar, hoisting national flag atop all of the government, semi- government, private and public buildings, educational and other institutions and organizations, holding discussion meetings, lighting of candle in memory of the martyred freedom fighters, playing of recorded historic speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the March 7, 1971, bringing out processions and holding cultural functions, march pasts and physical displays, and reception to Freedom Fighters.Chattogram Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin first placed wreaths at Shaheed Minar in the city.
Chittagong City Awami League (AL) led by its General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin, Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong Abdul Mannan, Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), Commissioner Mahbubur Rahman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Chittagong range, Khandoker Golam Faruk, Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Mohammad Ilias Hossain, Superintendent of District Police Nur-E-Alam Mina, Chattogram district Muktijoddah Sangsad Commander Shahab Uddin, Chairman of Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) Abdus Salam, former minister engineer Mosharrf Hossain, acting President of Chattogram North district A B M Fazle Karim Chowdhury, MP, and General Secretary MA Salam, Chattogram Press Club, Chattogram Union of Journalists and different socio-cultural organizations and individuals also placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar. Vice-Chancellor of Chattogram University (CU) Professor Dr Iftekhar Uddin Ahmed along with teachers, officers and employees of CU also placed wreaths at CU central Shaheed Minar in the morning.
On the occasion, special prayers were offered at mosques, temples, churches and other places of worship seeking peace and progress of the country. A film on Liberation War was screened. Besides, a reception was accorded to freedom fighters and family members of the martyred freedom fighters at M A Aziz stadium in the city.
A combined march past by police, Ansar, VDP personnel, Fire Service, BNCC, Girl Guide, Scouts and children and juveniles from different educational institutions was held at the M A Aziz Stadium in the city.
CU Correspondent adds: VCr Prof Dr. Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury paid tribute to the martyrs of the great liberation war on the occasion of Independence Day. Later, he paid tribute by giving flowers Father of the Nation Bangabandhu’s portrait at Bangabandhu Square.
Many programmes have been observed in Chittagong University (CU) with festive environment. Program activities were began at 8:00 am through national anthem on Tuesaday.
Discussion meeting was held at Bangabandhu Square with Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury was present as Chief GUESt and he said that the response of the Father of the nation Bangabandhu’s people of all works trivially scrambled in the armed struggle. Independent-Sovereign Bangladesh has established in the world map.
He also added that the Bengali nation has achieved the freedom of the great leader in the struggle for freedom, it has been established as an independent state, and today it has been able to make it worthy of the country as a Prime Minister of the country through the efficient and visionary country.
The VC added that the development philosophy of the modern Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been appreciated in the world. In order to continue this development, young people of the country must have the noble ideals of the Father of the Nation. In the non-communal spirit of the great liberation war, you must be established as a good citizen of modern, creative, aesthetic and human qualities.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Shirin Akhter, Proctor and OrganiSing Committee Convener Prof. Mohammad Ali Azgar Chowdhury, President of Teachers Association Professor Dr. Ahmed Salahuddin, Officer Association President AKM Mahfuzul Haque, President of the Employees’ Association Md. Anwar Hossain, Employee Union President. Abdul Hye also spoke on the occasion.
