The 44th Independence and National Day was observed in the port city as elsewhere in the district with renewed pledges to accelerate the trial of war criminals in line with the spirits of the Independence.
Besides government programs, different political parties, their front organisations, educational institutions, professional and trade bodies and socio- cultural organizations observed the day through daylong programmes.
The day’s programmes were heralded by 21 gun fires from atop the court building at 12.01 am which was followed by playing of whistles simultaneously from the rails, steamers and vessels of the port.
Placing of wreaths at Shaheed Minar at zero hours, hoisting national flag, holding discussion meetings, lighting of candle in memory of the 25th March crackdown, playing of recorded historic speech of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the 7th March, brought out processions, cultural functions, march pasts and physical displays, and reception to the Freedom Fighters are the highlights of the day’s programmes.
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor M Monzur Alam was the first to placed wreath at the Shaheed Minar on behalf of the CCC.
Immediately after Muktijuddah Sangsad, Administrator of Chittagong Jilla Pariad M A Salam, Chairman of Chittagong Development Authority Abdus Salam, Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong Mohammad Abdullah, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Shahidul Islam, Deputy Commissioner Abdul Mannan, Superintendent of Chittagong District Police Hafiz Akter, President of Chittagong North district Awami Leadue (AL) Nurul Alam Chowdhury, city AL vice President Advocate Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury Babul on behalf of city AL, Chittagong south district unit BNP, Jatiya Party, Workers Party, LDP, Chittagong Press Club, Chittagong Union of Journalists and different socio-cultural organisations and individuals placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar.
Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University (CU) Prof Anwarul Azim Arif along with teachers, officers and employees of CU placed wreaths at CU central Shaheed Minar this morning.
Bangladesh Railway Eastern Zone
Chittagong Bureau adds: Bangladesh Railway Eastern Zone celebrated the 44th Independence Day to build a prosperous and peaceful Bangladesh.
General Manager of Bangladesh Railway (East) Mokbul Ahmed paid homage to war heroes at CRB Shaeed Minar at about 6 am .
Besides, Scout, Girls Guide, Rover and RNB Band Party show their March Past ,Display and Sports event of Woman’s Pillow Passing was held. General Manager took salute and distributed the prizes.Later, 11 A.M all students and Rover Scout officers and staff joined to sing the national anthem.
A honorary crest was given by the Freedom to General Manager . All the officers and staff were present at the function.
