The indefinite strike enforced by Sylhet District Transport Owners and Workers Oikya Parishad demanding the withdrawal of a case filed against the president of Sylhet Road Transport Workers’ Union in the district, was called off on Thursday.
Samsul Haq Manik, treasurer of the Sylhet Road Transport Workers’ Union, came up with the announcement on Thursday evening as the local administration has met their one demand.
The union leader said, “We have called the strike to press home our two-point demand-one is to withdraw the case filed against our union president Selim Ahmed Folik and the other is to file a case against three people, including the president of Sylhet unit of CNG Filling Station and Petrol Pump Owners Association Jubayer Ahmed Chowdhury.”
“However, we will meet with the deputy commissioner on Friday evening and after the meeting we’ll take our next decision,” he added.
Earlier, transport owners and workers on Wednesday announced to go for an indefinite strike in Sylhet district from Friday demanding the withdrawal of a case filed against the president of Sylhet Road Transport Workers’ Union over an attack on a filling station in Dakkhin Surma upazila.
Besides, the owners of CNG filling stations and petrol pumps went on an indefinite strike in Sylhet division from Tuesday (April 12) morning after police refused to take a case in connection with the looting and vandalism of a CNG filling station at Daudpur in South Surma upazila.
They alleged that a group of leaders and activists of Sylhet Road Transport Workers’ Union, led by its president Selim Ahmed Folik, carried out the attack on the filling station on Monday afternoon.
As they went to South Surma Police Station for filing a case against some people, including Folik, the police station suggested filing the case excluding the name of Folik, they alleged.
Miscreants swooped on the Dakkhin Surma CNG and Petroleum Filling Station in Dakkhin surma bypass area on April 11 and vandalised the filling station and looted valuables.
The petrol pump owners alleged that the miscreants looted Tk 3.64 lakh from the filling station as per the direction of Folik.
