Central command of BNP in a unanimous decision nominated incumbent Mayor Manzoor Alam as mayor candidate in the coming city corporation election as the BNP candidate, party sources said.
As former Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Abdullah al Noman declined to contest, party high commanded opted for Manzoor as mayor candidate.
The party decision for nominating the incumbent Mayor was welcomed by the two leaders. Sources said that as per decision of the Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, the two senior central leaders discussed the matter with the chairperson’s press secretary Maruf Kamal and arrived at a decision.
Considering the present political situation in the country, Khaleda Zia was in favour of nominating the incumbent Mayor for contesting the election again.
Regarding the participation in the city corporation polls in Dhaka and Chittagong, mayor candidates for Dhaka South and Dhaka North are yet to be declared formally by the party high command.
Former Minister Amir Khasru, Abdullah al Noman, Mir Mohd. Nasiruddin, BNP city secretary Dr. Shahdat Hossain and Zillur Rahman were the aspirants for mayoral post. But finally all of them except Dr. Shahdat Hossain declined to contest the polls.
