Speakers at the concluding ceremony a three-day fruit tree fair on Thursday afternoon called upon all concerned, including rural people, for increasing fruit production to attain self-reliance through alleviating poverty.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and Rajibpur upazila administration jointly organised the Fruit Tree Fair- 2014 at Rajibpur upazila parishad premises in Kurigram since Tuesday last.
Chairman of Rajibpur upazila parishad Shafiul Alam Pradhan attended concluding ceremony of the fair as the chief guest and distributed prizes among the best stall owners with Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Latif Khan in the chair.
Upazila vice-chairman of Rajibpur Shafikul Islam, its female vice-chairman Bilkis Begum, Upazila Agriculture Officer Mohammad Akhteruzzaman, Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Sanoar Hossain and Upazila Fisheries Officer Ujjal Hossain addressed the ceremony as the special guests.
Upazila level officials of the DAE, different agriculture related departments, institutions and research organisations, NGOs, nursery owners, teachers, students, youths, farmers, local elite and common people were present.
Different government and non-government organisations and private sector nursery owners set up 12 stalls displaying varieties of indigenous and high yield variety fruit and saplings of fruit- bearing saplings on the fair ground.
The speakers in the concluding ceremony stressed for enhancing production of fruits, including local, indigenous and high yielding varieties through imparting necessary training and providing the latest technologies to the growers in rural areas.
The chief guest asked every citizen for planting all varieties of fruit, timber and medicinal plants to also maintain the ecology, environment, bio-diversity for saving the country from natural catastrophes as a result of adverse impacts of climate change.
He suggested for innovating high yielding and hybrid varieties of fruits to increase production round the year to meet nutritional demand for the population and assist the rural people in achieving self-reliance also to boost rural economy.
