The present government has taken effective steps for increasing fish production through proper utilisation of all water bodies to accelerate rural development, attain self-reliance on fish and meet nutrition of the population.
Speakers said this at separate ceremonies arranged for releasing 620 kg fish fires to 16 water bodies by the Upazila Fisheries Department at different places under Kawnia upazila in the district on Monday.
Kawnia Upazila Vice-chairman Abdur Razzaque formally inaugurated the programme through releasing fish fries at the main ceremony arranged at ‘Tafshidanga Beel’ in the upazila as the chief guest.
With Upazila Fisheries Officer Sanjoy Banerjee in the chair, Upazila Animal Resources Officer Dr ARM Al-Mamun, Cooperatives Officer Dulalur Rahman, Editor of the Weekly ‘Prottyashar Alo’ Sarwar Alam Mukul and Field Assistant Saiful Islam addressed.
The speakers said the economic prospect of the fisheries sector in very bright in the country and called for boosting fish production side by side conserving water bodies and protecting natural breeding grounds and stopping catch of smaller fishes.
They stressed for preserving the extinct and indigenous fish species to increase fish production for achieving economic self-reliance by the rural people, including fishermen community, besides meeting nutritional demand.
The chief guest suggested for proper utilisation of all ponds, beels, haors and flood plains through fish cultivation adopting latest technologies ensuring best use of existing natural resources to make the nation self-sufficient on fish output.
