Minister for Social Welfare Md. Mohsin Ali emphasised the need for inclusive education for the disabled students and learning behavioral approach than exclusive systems .
He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of 2-day long seminar-cum-workshop on Inclusive Education focusing on Learning Disabilities and Behavioral Approach on yesterday at LGED auditorium in city as arranged by the Frobel Play School as chief guest .Frobel School is being runned by a reputed industrial group of Chittagong -BSRM group. Mrs. Huwra (Tehseen) Zohair, a Special Educator, Administrative Director and the Principal of Frobel Play School is organizing the event.
Frobel Play School is the pioneer pre-school in Chittagong and is leading the cause for inclusion of children with learning disabilities into mainstream education.
Three hundred teachers, eighty students, and a hundred government officials as well as heads of various institutions, sponsors, and parents have collaborated to make this seminar a success. The event has been inaugurated by the Minister Mr. Mohsin Ali of Government Republic of Bangladesh. Special guests include Member of Parliament Mrs. Waseqa Ayesha Khan, Deputy Director of Primary Education (Ctg Division) Md Mahbubur Rahman Billah, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Mrs. Baundana Das, and Head of Unicef Chittagong zone Mrs. Madhuri Bannerjee who is also serving as a penal member.
The main purpose of the seminar is to create awareness about the various learning difficulties many children face in mainstream schools and the workshops are meant to provide teachers with guidelines about identifying and treating such children. The topics discussed include learning how to differentiate between learning difficulties and disabilities, defining learning disabilities, looking at causes, and types of learning difficulties. The purpose of the workshops is to prepare relevant professionals so that they can help others include such children in mainstream schools. Other topics discussed to aid this mission are School Wide Positive Behavioral Support (SWPBS), challenges of SWPBS, and developing strategies for specific cultural and contextual settings.
The keynote speakers are Dr. Geet Oberoi of India and Alefiya Nomanbhoy of Malaysia. Dr. Geet Oberoi is the Founder President of Orkids Foundational Society and has been working in the field of special education for almost 20 years. Orkids is the largest chain of multidisciplinary clinics in India, which provides remedial intervention to children with special needs, especially those with learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder [ASD], underachievers’, scholastic backwardness and other Developmental delays. She has a doctorate in Learning Disabilities and is conducting workshops on Learning Disabilities.
Alefiya Nomanbhoy is currently Director of Postgraduate Taught Programmes and Assistant Professor in Special Needs at the School of Education, University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus. She holds a Ph.D. in the Field of Learning Disabilities, Clinical Psychology, Master Certification in Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) and the Post Graduate Diploma of Teaching in Higher Education. Alefiya has extensive experience in the field of learning disabilities, behaviour management, and teacher training. She will conduct workshop on Behavioral Management today .
Other distinguished guests include the penal moderator Aouana Marzia, penal members Madhuri Banerjee, Dr. Basana Muhuri, Dr. Fahmida, Professor Dr. Mahmood Ahmed Chowdhury ( Arzu), and Baundana Das.
