Bangladesh has already met several targets of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and it needs to ensure inclusive development for achieving remaining MDGs target within a stipulated time, development experts said.
Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in the areas of poverty reduction, reducing the prevalence of underweight children, increasing enrolment at primary schools, lowering the infant mortality rate and maternal mortality ratio, improving immunization coverage and reducing the incidence of communicable diseases, they made the observation at a discussion here on Monday.
The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) organized the discussion at its conference room on the occasion of Millennium Development Goals Report 2015, a UNIC press release said.
Development and governance activist Dr. Zahirul Alam, representatives of NGOs, academicians, communication experts, civil society members and youngsters, among others, addressed the discussion with UN expert and Director (com.) of Dhaka Ahsania Mission Kazi Ali Reza in the chair.
UNIC Officer-in-Charge M. Moniruzzaman moderated the round-table and shared the salient features of the report, which shows that there are significant improvements in various goals during the last fifteen years globally including Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has made significant strides in different indicators of development; Reza said, adding inclusiveness and equity can play a key role for sustainable evelopment and growth in the country.
Bangladesh has made commendable progress in alleviating poverty and hunger as it is maintaining excellent economic growth over the last two decades, other speakers said adding it needs to ensure equal economic opportunities for all to ensure sustainable development.
