Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Forest and Environment Dr Hasan Mahmud observed that the climate refugee issue needs to be included in the upcoming Paris Agreement.
“Climate refugee is now a reality as people of some coastal regions have started to leave their houses due to rise of sea level. The Paris conference is the last chance to include climate refugee in the UN definition of refugee,” he said this while speaking at a discussion here.
Bangladesh Climate Change Journalist Forum (BCJF), Institute of Diploma Engineers of Bangladesh (IDEB) and Network on Climate Change of Bangladesh (NCCB) on Wednesday organized the roundtable discussion titled “Climate Politics: Road to Paris” at Jatiya Press Club here.
Presided over by IDEB President AKMA Hamid, the discussion was also addressed, among others, by Saymum Sarwar Komol, PKSF Chairman Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed, JPC General Secretary Qamrul Islam Chowdhury, BCJF President Kawsar Ahmed, environment experts Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Dr Fazle Rabbi, Sadek Ahmed and Mirza Shawkat Ali.
Executive director of Center for Participatory Research and Development (CPRD) M Samsuddoha and NCCB coordinator Mizanur Rahman Bijoy presented the keynote paper.
They said the Bangladesh delegation should raise voice in the Paris conference to get allocation from the green climate fund as a grant without any condition.
