Incessant rains coupled with onrush of water from the hilly upstream causes immense sufferings to the people in Sylhet district.
Floodwater has disrupted road communications. Roads and highways suffered damage, electricity polls collapsed and plants were uprooted at several spots in the district during the last few days.
The rains have also paralyzed the normal activities in the district during the last four days, wreaking havoc on normal life and trade.
Executive Engineer of Sylhet Roads and Highways Department (RHD) Employer said the flashflood caused mudslide at around 25 spots under eight upazilas in the district while it washed away a big portion of road in Companigonj area that disconnected Sylhet-Goainghat-Companigonj road communications in last four days.
‘The communications will remain disconnected in next two weeks as we need time to remove the mud, repair the bridges and road,’ he said.
An Agriculture Officer in Sylhet said it recorded around 220 millimeters of rainfall in the district in last four days.
The rain affected around 1000 families at Companigonj, 500 families at Jointiapur and 600 families at Goainghat upazila in the Sylhet district, he added.
The rainwater also damaged standing crops on around 3000 acres of land and vegetable field.
Deputy Commissioner Md Shohidul Islam, Sylhet said poor people, who lived in low-lying areas in the district, have been the worst sufferers.
‘We provided them with dry foods and some financials assistant as instant relief,’ the DC said.
