Incessant rain cripples civic life in Port City

Incessant rain f or the last two days in the port city of Chattogram paralysed the civic life . Chittogram recorded 174 mm of rain in the last 24 hours from 9 pm on Thursday , according to Patenga Met office.
In this situation, warning signal number 4 has been issued for Chattogram seaport and for the river ports of the country with warning signal number 2.Lowlying areas of the city were innundaed with waist deep to knee deep water. Slums in Bakalia, Nasirabad, Bahaddarhat, Chowkbazar, Oxygen, Agrabad and Agrabad posh areas submerged with rain water accompanied by tidal water . The shunties of these areas worstly damaged the household utensils and bad beddling by flood water. The kitchen market of Chowkbazar was worstly affected with rain water. The maximum godowns and wholesale dealers of essential commodities in the business hub of Chaktai and Khatungong submerged in ground floor with high tidal water of sea accompanied with rain water. Onions, garlicks, rice, and other essentials were badly damaged with sudden tide water of sea . A spokesman of the Khatungonj Trade Association said the traders of Khatungonj and Chaktai were mostly affected and we are ascertaining the volume of losses.
Meanwhile, the Chattogram district administration has started to evacuate the people living at risk on the hill top and hill pockets fearing of landslides due to heavy rains. In addition to miking, 15 shelters have been set up in different parts of the city for people living with ‘ life risk’ to move to safer shelters.
Under Kattli ward, six educational institutions have been made temporary shelters at Pahartali, Foy’s Lake, Akbar Shah, Kaibalyadham, Khulshi, Jalalabad and Chandranagar areas. Under Agrabad centre , 5 educational institutions have been prepared as temporary shelters in Lalkhan Bazar, Pora Colony and AK Khan Pahar area.
Besides, hills adjacent to Amin Jute Mill under Chandgaon thana , Bhera Fakir Hill, Raufabad Rashidia Madrasa for Tankir Hill area and Motijharna under Bakalia Circle, Batali Hill area have been provided as temporary shelters.
Chattogram Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) SM Zakaria told media that “We are miking in the hills to evacuate people to safer shelters due to fears of landslides and to heavy rains.” Regular miking is also being done from local mosques and madrasas. People are moving to the homes of their relatives in the city.
He said 15 temporary shelters arranged for those who have no relatives or a place to stay. Meals have been arranged in these shelters. Anyone living at risk in the hills can take refuge in these shelters.
Sheikh Farid Ahmed, a meteorologist and forecasting officer at the Patenga Meteorological Department, told that the sky may be cloudy in the next 24 hours. At the same time, there may be moderate to heavy rain with temporary gusts or gusty winds and heavy downpour in some places.
