During this time of turmoil around the South Asian states of Pakistan and India, Prime Minister Imran Khan is constantly making headlines.
Now, Pakistanis are trying to get him to win the Nobel Peace Prize after he decided to return captured Indian pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthman to his nation, as a gesture of peace.
Social media users managed to make #NobelPeacePrizeForImranKhan the top trend in Pakistan today and also started a petition to nominate Khan to win the prize.
The campaign started by Rameez Asif on the
global petitioning platform change.org aimed to gain 50,000 signatures. However, the petition achieved its target so quickly that he soon had to change its goal to 150,000 signs. Currently, over 78,000 have signed it.
On Twitter, Pakistanis appreciated Khan’s approach to the issue.
Tweep, @Zuni62534285, posted a picture of the premier and wrote: “I truly feel that I am the most lucky person in the world because I am a Pakistani and this person is my PM #NobelPeacePrizeForImranKhan”
Whereas user Aaqil Ghafoor Bajwa, @agbajwa, highlighted why he thinks Khan ‘deserves’ the award: “#PMImranKhan resolved the crisis like a statesman, and saved millions of lives by his action in last 2-3 days. He deserves a Nobel Prize for peace. #NobelPeacePrizeForImranKhan”
Andleeb Abbas, a politician from Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and currently Pakistan’s Federal Parliamentary Secretary for foreign affairs, quoted American theologian and author James Freeman Clarke. Using her handle, @AndleebAbbas, she tweeted: “‘A politician thinks of the next election, a statesman thinks of the next generation’… James Freeman Clarke … #NobelPeacePrizeForImranKhan”
It seemed like some people from India chose to keep political differences aside and appreciated Khan’s efforts as well.
User, @zohadshad, shared an image with an Indian youngster thanking Khan and wrote: “A picture worth a thousand words. #NobelPeacePrizeForImranKhan”
Bollywood celebrity Esha Gupta also took to Twitter to thank Khan for promoting peace. She, @eshagupta2811, posted: “A big leap for mankind and peace… thank you @ImranKhanPTI sir.. #SayNotToWar”
Similarly, Meera Chopra, a south Indian actress, @MeerraChopra, wrote: “Huge respect for this man @ImranKhanPTI, a big thank you for returning #Abhinanadan tomorrow and truly setting an example that we all want peace.”
