UNB, Dhaka :
Rejecting the Supreme Court verdict commuting Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee’s death penalty to imprisonment till death, Ganajagaran Mancha on Wednesday said the verdict reflects that there is an entente between Jamaat-e-Islami and the government.
“It (verdict) couldn’t fulfill people’s expectation …it has triggered anger among people,” Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Dr Imran H Sarkar told reporters at Shahbagh intersection in the morning in an instant reaction to the verdict.
He further said, “This verdict is motivated and there was a conspiracy behind it. We can’t accept this verdict because it goes against mass people’s expectation.”
Spokesperson of Ganajagaran Mancha’s another faction Kamal Pasa said, “Sayedee’s death penalty is our only demand. We can’t accept this (verdict).”
He said they are planning to wage a united movement along with Imran H Sarkar. “We’ll start our united movement this (Wednesday) afternoon.” Ganajagaran Mancha activists staged demonstration at Shahbagh intersection in the morning after the verdict by the country’s top court was announced reducing Sayedee’s punishment.
The agitators were chanting slogans demanding that the judgment be rescinded.
Law enforcers then chased the protesters and lobbed teargas shells and used water cannon to disperse them, leaving four people, including Imran injured.
Four of the injured, including Imran, were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
