BSS, Rajshahi :
Speakers in a community level discussion observed that wide-ranging expansion of artificial insemination of cows could be the effective means of significant achievement in improving the cattle breeding system to meet up the gradually increasing protein demands.
They viewed emphasis should be given on successful expansion of the activities among the farmers in both the urban and rural areas as its demands are gradually increasing. All the government and non-government organizations concerned should work together to attain desired yield in this regard.
They made these observations while inaugurating an artificial insemination centre in Char Alataly Union under Sadar Upazila of Chapainawabganj district yesterday.
Agriculture Sustainable and Socioeconomic Development Organization (ASSEDO) under its project titled “Nodi O Jiban (River and Life)-2” established the centre with financial support of Concern Worldwide and Irish aid.
With Agriculturist Rabiul Alam, Executive Director of ASSEDO, in the chair, District Animal Resource Officer Abdul Mannan and its Upazila Officer Dr Kabir Uddin Ahmed attended and addressed the inaugural session as chief and special guests respectively.
ASSEDO Programme Coordinator Mahabub Jaman, Project Manager Nurul Islam, Technical Officer Younus Ali and VFA Naimul Islam also spoke.
Abdul Mannan said artificial insemination has a vital role to play in expansion of the cattle breeding and the program could be expanded
successfully if all the villages are brought under the coverage. The
technology helps increasing milk production by one kg from every cow on an average for the last couple of years.
Due to the cross breeding the cows can give milk ten times more than the conventional ones, he added.
Rabiul Alam said that the main thrust of the five-year Nodi O Jiban programme is to ensure food security of the extreme poor community through involving them in diversified productive and income generating activities.
To this end, the project has provision to reduce the erosion of assets and income especially homesteads houses, standing crops, livestock, trees, utensils and furniture.
Linkage was established with Union level disaster management committee for capacity building and reducing their vulnerability relating to the adverse impact of climate change through organizational and national level climate change initiatives.
Upon successful implementation of the project by June 2016, acreage of homestead gardening coupled with the number of livestock farmers and gardeners will be enhanced.
As a whole, livelihood condition of the targeted people will be elevated side by side with qualitative change in farming activities and production.
