LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain on Sunday called upon all concerned to work with sincerity and devotion to bring all people in the country under improved sanitation system by 2030.
“Improved sanitation system would have to be ensured to attain Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he said this on Sunday while speaking as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of ‘National Sanitation Month-2016’ at the auditorium of Department of Public Health Engineering in the city.
The minister said currently 61 percent people of the country are under improved sanitation system. All would have to work with devotion and sincerity to bring cent percent people under improved sanitation by 2030.
Presided over by Local Government Division Secretary Abdul Melek, the function was also addressed by State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives M. Mashiur Rahman Ranga, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Anisul Huq, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokan and Department of Public Health Engineering Chief Engineer M. Wali Ullah, among others. Khandker Mosharraf Hossain formally inaugurated the National Sanitation Month and said Bangladesh will get recognition as a middle income country before 2021.
Improved sanitation system will play a significant role in this regard, he added.
State Minister M. Mashiur Rahman Ranga said the government is working to ensure sanitation for all and 99 percent people have already been brought under this.
DNCC Mayor Anisul Huq said the citizens would have to be conscious and come forward to ensure improved water supply and sanitation system in the capital.
DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokan said SDGs would have to be achieved by creating awareness among the people about improved sanitation system.
Engineer M Wali Ullah said currently 28 percent people use joint latrines and 10 percent use low-quality latrines.
Marking the sanitation month, awareness programmes will be observed at city corporation, division, district, upazila and union levels.
