The Vice-Chancellor of the Jagannath University Professor Dr Mijanur Rahman said, “The government should increase tax on tobacco on order to reduce use thereof and that the people can be aware of its bad effects.”
The VC told this as the chief guest at a seminar named ‘Tobacco: It Kills’ in the university central auditorium yesterday. The Department of English of JnU, ‘Tobacco Control and Research Cell’ of Dhaka International University (DIU), Prottasha (an anti-drug organisation) and Platform-Dream for Better Bangladesh jointly organised the programme..
“Tobacco not only injures our health, but also ruins our environment”, he said.
Former Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical University Professor Dr Pran Gopal Dutta presented the key-note paper in the seminar.
English Department Chairman Profesor Dr Abu Zafor presided over the programme.
JnU Treasurer Professor Md. Selim Bhuiyan, Arts Faculty Dean Professor Dr Mohammad Selim, DIU Tobacco Control and Research Cell President Barrister Shamim Haider, among others, spoke in the programme.
