Importers demand tax cut on handsets in proposed budget

Bangladesh Mobile Phone Importers Association (BMPIA) on Saturday demanded to the government to keep the existing tax on foreign-made mobile handsets through withdrawing another 5 percent tax imposed in the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2017-18, said a press release.
They made the call at a post budget press conference held in a city hotel.
“The proposed tax structure will encourage the import of foreign-made handsets in unauthorised channel, resulting the government will loss huge amounts of revenue and importers will face hurdle to run businesses following an uneven competition,” said BMPIA President Ruhul Alam Al Mahbub.
He urged the government to continue the existing tax structure for next fiscal as the establishment of assembling industry is time consuming with developing skill manpower.
Welcoming the move by the government to flourish local assembling industry, Mahbub said: “we are optimistic that we can manufacture 90 percent of the total sale of the handsets in locally if the tax on backward linkage equipment is fixed 5 percent for next three fiscals.”
In the proposed budget for FY18, Finance Minister A M A Muhith imposed 10 percent duty on foreign- made mobile handsets.
Mentioning that 97 percent of total internet users of the country is browsing internet on mobile phone handsets, BMPIA President hoped the government will fix tax in accordance with computer accessories to materialise the digital Bangladesh campaign.
Secretary of BMPIA Rejwanul Huq and other leaders were present.
