The imported onion price dropped to Tk 28-35 per kg in the city’s kitchen markets on Monday, which was selling at Tk 49-50 per kg just five days ago.
Prices of imported onion at Hili Land Port in Dinajpur have dropped by Tk 15-17 per kg over the last few days, land port sources said. Onion importer Sirajul Islam told
The New Nation yesterday that the sharp fall in the import price has been an outcome of the increased supply of onion in the market.
“The prices of onion dropped twice in the last few days as the newly harvested Indian ‘Sukhsagor’ variety has started to arrive in the market,” he said.
Ruhul Amin, another trader, said prices of imported onion would be in the low trend as the newly harvested ones have started arriving in the country.
Meanwhile, the Indian central government has removed the minimum export price (MEP) on onions, bringing relief to the onion farmers in the country.
The decision came into effect from Friday evening, reported the Times of India. The Indian government imposed the MEP in November last year to keep the domestic market stable and the rising prices in check.
