Imports of consignments through containers alarmingly increases through the main harbor of the country-Chittgong recently.
Sources said, every kinds of commodities such as foodgrains, capital machineries , raw materials of industrial sectors, household utensils etc are being imported through container .
According to port statistics, the use of containers for commodity imports increases by 14.9 % in immediate past fiscal of 2014-15 than the previous fiscal . During the period , 18 lakh 67 thousand 134 TEUs containers were handled whereas it was 16 lakh 25 thousand 509 TEUs in 2013-14 .
Between these two fiscals, container transportation incrases 1 lakh 41 thousand 625 containers in current fiscal. In 2012-13 , container handled 13 lakh 4 thousand 408 TEUs.
Port sources said, the container transportation progressed for three reasons. The reasons are – whole consignment of the export commodities are being transported through containers , secondly due to present stable political situation ship handling increases and thirdly the overall countries economic progress is now on progressing.
Terminal Manager of Chittagong Port Authorigy Md. Enamul Karim told that the port activities of Chittagong never halt in any awkward situations and no vessel returned from port due poitical turmoil in the country.
First Vice President of BGMEA Nasiruddin Chowdhury told that the raw materials of RMG sectors are being imported through conainer package and lionshare of RMG exports go through containers and hence the container tranaportation incrases recently .
Terminal Manager also told that the container transportation will increase further in future if full utilization of the New Mooring Continer Terminal is possible. BGMEA sources said it is essential to incrases the capacity of port and efficiency of the port officials, workers to achieve the desired goal. He also mentioned the New Mooring terminal and existing port container terminals should be utilized fully with providing all equipments for handling.
A port users sourcessaid in immediate past fiscal, the container transportation increases with snail pace but alarmingly increases from November last.
Remarkable containers handled in June where about 1 lakh 71 thousand and 798 containers handled which is highest of all previous records.
