Immersion of the idols of goddess Durga was held on Saturday, marking the end of five-day Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindu community after Bijaya Dashami.
The festival started on Tuesday with ‘Bodhan’, ‘Amontran’ and ‘Adhibas’ of goddess Durga on the Shasthi.
The Mahasaptami Puja was offered on Wednesday while Mahastami and Kumari Puja on Thursday.
This year, puja (veneration) is being offered at some 28,458 mandaps across the country, including 219 in Dhaka city. Last year, the number was 28,000, including 212 in the capital.
According to Hindu faith, goddess Durga comes down to Earth from the Heaven to establish peace, harmony by annihilating evil forces.
The traditional Bijaya Dashami processions were be brought out from Dhakeshwari temple in the capital at 3 pm on Saturday under the auspicious of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad and Mahanagar Sarbajanin Puja Committee. The procession praded different city streets and end on the bank of the Buriganga River before the immersion.
