Some NGOs here on Saturday demanded immediate steps to save the lives in the coastal districts from erosion and tidal water intrusion.
The demands came out at a human chain in front of National Press Club organized by eighteen rights based civil society and coastal organizations, said a release.
Coastal Association for Social Transformation (COAST) Trust representative Sawkat Ali Tutul read out an 8-point charter of demands.
The demands included emergency and short-term allocation for repairing embankments in FY 2014- 15, ensuring transparency in organisations including Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), deployment of army in critical places, people’s participation in the work of BWDB and Considering the protection of coastal people and land as the priority issues in the National Climate Adaptation Plan.
EquityBD and COAST representative Mostafa Kamal Akanda, Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) from AHM Bazlur Rahman, Aminur Rasul Babul of Unnayan Dhara Trust, Mohamed Yasin of Coastal Protection Movement, Subol Das of Bangladesh Bhumihin Somity, Zayed Iqbal Khan of Bangladesh Krishok Federation and Sawkat Ali Tutul and Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of EquityBD and COAST spoke at the event. Online Knowledge Society, United People Trust, Unnayan Dhara Trust, Coastal Protection Movement, EquityBD, Kishani Shova, Charfassion Shorif Para Ekota Songho, Coastal Development Partnership, Bodwip Forum, Bangladesh Krishok Federation, Bangladesh Bhumihin Somity, BNNRC, CMAS, Sirajganj Flood Forum, Swapnapuri, Suraakha O Agragoti Foundation, Saikat Unnayan Sangsta, and Humanity Watch formed the human chain.
