Affected people carrying red-flags organised a human chain on river bank and boat chain at the mid-river in erosion affected Charbaria and Beltala areas of Barisal city on Wednesday calling for immediate step to stop Kirtankhola River erosion.
‘Amara Bachtey Chai ( ABC/We Want to Live), a local organisation of the erosion-affected people on banks and mid-rivers of Kirtankhola near trawler-ghat of Charbaria and another group of Charabdani near trawler-ghat at Beltala areas of the city organised the programmes from Wednesday morning to noon.
Hundreds of erosion affected and endangered people participated in these programmes blocking river transportations for at least 4-hour.
The programme at Charbaria was presided over by Jalal Hossain, convener of ABC, and addressed among others by Aiub Hossain, Jahirul Huq Khan Shahin, Wahidul Huq Talukdar, Shamim Matubbar, leaders and activists of ABC, Rehana Begum, Sadar upazila parishad vice-chairman, Hanina Begum local union parishad member.
On other hand the programme of the erosion affected people of Charabdani at Beltala Kheayaghat in the city was presided over by Md. Shahalam, Charabaia union parishad member, and addressed among others by Jebunnessa Aroj, local AL lawmaker, Saidur Rahman Rintu, Sadar upazila parishad chairman.
Speakers of the programmes said that Charbaria, Charabdani, Char Ulalghuni, Lamchhari areas affected mostly in recent erosion caused by speedy current of Kirtankhola River.
More than 50 establishments with crop lands, plantation of trees, educational- socio-religious institutions, several residential and business units already eroded away within a week and at least 40 establishments including shops, houses, institutions and roads under severe threats of eroding away at any moment already eroded away more that half kilometer area, they told.
