TODAY is the Holy Ashura, the day of noble sacrifice of Imam Husein, the grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SM). The Muslim Ummah observes 10th of Muharram every year remembering his great sacrifice all over the world. On this day Imam Husein with 71 of his family members and faithful companions were brutally killed at Karbala on the bank of River Euphrates in Iraq by Yazid forces to halt his fight against his tyranny. Imam Husein took the fight following Yazid’s appointment by his father Mu-awiyah as the new ruler of Iraq disowning the authority of the Caliph of the Islamic State run from Madina. The Imam travelled the long way at the invitation of the people of Kufa to restore the legitimate government in the province of Iraq. But he was killed by Yazid bringing conspiracy and sedition for the first time in running the Islamic State established by Prophet Muhammad (SM) destroying its foundation and the practice of electing rulers through democratic consensus.
History said Imam Husein took to organize resistance to save the Caliphate from falling into evil hands as it had poised serious threat to the integrity of the Islamic State of Madina. It is for this reason that his sacrifice is commemorated throughout the Muslim world as a lesson how to resist evils and restore legitimate government – no matter it demands supreme sacrifice.
Imam Husein has left behind the legacy for the Muslim Ummah to resist unjust governments. The situation in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan and in almost all other Muslim countries shows his concerns were quite right because usurpers have no respect for people’s government and their human rights. They can destroy the entire nation. He left behind the message that resistance is required to establish the rule of law and justice in society. It needs selfless leadership that Imam Husein showed by his great sacrifice. May Allah rest his soul in peace. Ameen.
