‘Illegal structures to be removed from highways soon’

The government has taken massive plan to remove the illegal establishments on highways lying for years.
Kitchen and cattle markets, hawkers’ makeshift pavilions, tea stalls and other structure on the Dhaka-Tangail, Dhaka-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Chittagong and Jashore-Khulna highways are hindering the traffic movement and causing accidents almost every day, the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry source said.
The Ministry took many initiatives to remove the illegal structures in the past, but did not work due to defiance by the vested quarter.
Ministry’s top officials recently held several meetings to find out an action plan to overcome the problems.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Friday ordered the authorities concerned to remove all the roadside illegal establishments across the country within a week.
Over two hundred illegal structures were demolished in a special eviction drive on both sides of the Pabna Bus Terminal area on Wednesday.
Roads and Highways Department had taken the massive eviction drive for constructing four-lane highway for connecting the district, officials said.
Similar eviction drives were conducted on Pabna-Rajshahi highway and Pabna-Kushtia highway on Monday and Tuesday respectively, officials said.
