Sylhet Correspondent :
A number of floating markets on the Sylhet railway tracks at Railgate area in the city are posing serious risk of accidents.
Floating and mobile traders are carrying out their business on the nose of authorities concerned despite the risk of accidents. They are paying illegal toll as rent to a section of unscrupulous influential people, railway staffs and police, they alleged.
During a recent visit to the spots including new and old railway station area The Correspondent found that floating or mobile markets were set up on rail lines. Different essentials especially fishes and vegetables are being sold and purchased in the floating and mobile markets. Despite fatal accident risk, the traders set up their shops on the railway tracks, while the buyers are often crowded to purchase different goods from them.
While talking, some buyers said they can purchase different sorts of necessary commodities from the mobile markets with cheaper rate than other markets. For this reason, they come to such markets to buy something ignoring life risk.
Some traders seeking anonymity told that they are forced to pay Tk 100 as toll everyday for sitting on the railway tracks. The money collected from them is shared among the local influential quarters, railway staffs and police.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of GRP said “It is possible to resolve the problem permanently by fencing around the sensitive spots, where the mobile or floating traders set up their shops on railway lines and tracks taking life risk. If fences are set up at such places, nobody could be reached in the restricted areas violating the protection measure.”
