Chittagong Bureau :
The footpaths and both the edges of streets, particularly along the main streets, of the port city have gone under illegal occupation from the onset of the holy month of Ramadan, causing much suffering for the pedestrians and commuters.
Most of the footpaths have turned into hawkers market while both sides of the roads have been being used as parking zones. As a result, the actual width of the streets have shrunk, which is causing serious traffic congestion in the city.
Vehicles have to remain stuck in long tailback for hours. The traffic system of the city has already been collapsed. According to sources, owners of private vehicles including cars use the roads including Jamal Khan, Momin Road, GEC point roads, Mehidibag Road, Kajirdewri Road, New Market Road, Station Road and other important roads to park their vehicles.
The decision taken by Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) and Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) to make the port city Chittagong free of traffic congestion and free the footpaths from the clutch of illegal occupiers is yet to be materialized.
It may be mentioned that Road and Bridge Minister Obaidul Quader MP held a meeting with the owners and workers leaders of auto rickshaws of the port city at Chittagong Circuit House earlier. In the meeting the minister directed the mayor of Chittagong Alhaj A J M Nasir Uddin to restore discipline in transport sector in the city.
