In a daylong eviction drive of Chittagong City Corporation evicted 30 kutcha dwelling houses from the engrossment of Mariamkhal(canal) in city on Monday . These kutcha houses were erected by occupying the land of the canal since long by the influential groups but the city watchdog did not take any positive measures earlier. Eyewitness’s sources said some influential group built these kutcha houses by filling earth inside the canal side and rented out to low income groups.
Sources said this canal is almost filled by the unauthorised persons. Following the erection of kutcha houses, the water flow is hampered to maximum extents caused waterlogging in rainy season. In the meantime, to free the city from water logging, CCC sanctioned Tk.20 lakh for reexcavation of the canal. As such , a enviction team led by the Executive Magistrate Nazia Shireen conducted eviction drive on Monday last and demolished these unauthorised inslallations from the canal side. Mentionable that CCC earlier noticed to these unauthorised occupants of Mariamkhal to shifttheir belongings from the canal side but they did not responded.
