Police on Monday evicted all the nurseries on the footpaths near the Curzon Hall of Dhaka University.
The Shahbgah police evicted at least 50 nurseries, which occupied the footpaths illegally, during the drive.
Police said the nurseries on the footpaths had created obstacle to the movement of
the pedestrians. Besides, it also posed threat to the security of Curzon Hall, Bangladesh Shishu Academy and the International Crime Tribunals as criminals often use the nurseries as their shelters.
Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station Md Abul Hasan told The New Nation on Monday that the police asked the illegal occupier to free the footpaths, but they did not follow the direction. Finally, the police evicted the nurseries.
“We requested the illegal occupiers to free the footpaths and remove their plants from the street for holding Rathayatra procession on Monday. Besides, President Abdul Hamid will use the road today (Tuesday) to take part the special convocation of Dhaka University. But they did not respond,” the OC said.
Earlier, Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation Sayeed Khokon told The New Nation that the corporation has no plan to free the footpaths from the illegal occupation in the university area.
He said the pottery outlets carry the country’s tradition. “So we should protect it,” the Mayor said.
When asked about the suffering of the students and pedestrians the DSCC mayor said that he would take initiative to minimize the sufferings of the people.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique told this correspondent that the footpaths are controlled by the DSCC. It doesn’t look good that the shops will remain on the university campus. It is not decent.
“The university administration often conducts drives to remove floating people from the footpaths. We several times have asked the city corporation authorities to remove such illegal establishments from the university campus. But they are yet to take any action against the illegal occupation,” the VC said.
