Import of motor bike in illegal route, hiding its CC and showing under invoice, has increased in the country with expanding demand of different brands of motorbike.
As a result, the government losses revenue and the customers are being cheated in buying such bikes in over pricing, sources of tax intelligence section said.
Security concerned has also been raised as anyone can use the illegally imported bikes for committing crimes here, the sources said.
RNJ enterprise of Bara Mogbazar in the city has imported 24 motor bikes of two popular brands from dolphin motor, India. Price of each brand was shown US$850 and $950 respectively during import though their real price is $1060 to $1150.
As a result, the government lost around $12000 tax revenue from the import of these motor bikes, they said.
NBR sources said, the import of motor bikes here has increased over four lakh pieces in 2016-17 fiscal year, though it was 2.5 lakh in 2011-12 FY.
Bangladesh Motorcycle Assemblers & Manufacturers Association (BMAMA) sources said, 86 per cent local demand of motor bike is met up by import and the rest 14 per cent filled up by local manufacturers.
Treasurer of BMAMA and provider of TVS motorcycle Biplob Kumar Roy told this reporter that motorbike is imported in legal way by paying 150 per cent tax while illegal importer pay less tax as they shown lower price through under invoice.
On the other hand, the buyers will not get proper service who bought the illegally imported motor bikes as those bikes are not available here, he said.
Additional DIG (Transport) of Police AKM Hafij Akhter said that illegal motor bike import has increased in the recent days in the country.
Police are aware of the illegally imported motorbike and they seized many of those in different police stations in Dhaka and across the country, he said.
Assistant Director of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) at Miprpur office Md. Shamsul Kabir said, BRTA works jointly with customs authorities to registration of imported motor bikes for identifying CC and other documents.
